Every product starts as an idea.

The first step in the product development process is to shape this idea into something which is real and buildable. We help you define the requirements of your product, and the constraints it needs to work within.

This step minimises the number of surprises that can appear later, ensuring your product is delivered on time, to spec, and with satisfaction.

Every electronic design begins with the schematic.

The schematic details which components will be used in the design, and how they electrically connect to one another. This document serves as the blueprint that the electronics is built from.

Once we have agreed on the design, the next step is to turn this schematic into a physical board.

At this stage, the schematic document becomes a real, physical circuit board.

This is when we define the physical shape of the board, place the components, and route the connections between them. It is important that the PCB layout and any mechanical design collaborate early for a cohesive design with minimal surprises later.

Firmware development

Firmware is the software that lives inside your product and brings it to life. It reads the sensors, processes data, controls user interfaces, and enables communication with the outside world.

Wireless connectivity

Often the first thing many consider in an Internet-of-Things product: How will I get data off my device? There are a myriad of wireless technologies available, and as you would expect, each have their own trade-offs and address their own use-cases.

The common trade-off triangle is Range ↔ Bandwidth ↔ Power. Pulling on one, pushes on the other two. For example, in the pursuit of long range, you may need to increase transmit power, or decrease bandwidth.

It is essential to understand how these three contraints influence your product. With practical experience in nearly every wireless technology, we use our intimate knowledge to identify which is the most suitable for you: Bluetooth® LE, Wi-Fi, LTE-M, NB-IoT, LTE™ Cat 1 bis, NB-NTN (Non-Terrestrial Network), DECT-NR+, LoRaWAN, NFC, RFID, UWB, ZigBee®, Thread®, and Matter.

Low power

Optimising for power consumption is a complex task and takes careful planning and consideration from the very start of the product development process. There are many aspects that influence battery life:

  • Hardware components
  • Wireless technologies
  • Sensors
  • Sample frequency
  • Telemetry frequency
  • Data encoding
  • Security
  • Battery size & chemistry
  • Environmental conditions
  • Charging options (if any)
  • Product size & weight
  • And of course, cost

Understanding how all of these variables affect battery life is where we add immense value, ensuring your product runs for as long as you need it to.

Edge AI

As processors become increasingly low-power and performant - and, more recently, incorporate dedicated Neural-Processing-Units (NPUs) - performing intelligence at the edge becomes increasingly viable in many applications, enabling new solutions that were once impossible.

We can now run small trained models directly on constrained, battery-powered devices, enabling sensor fusion or on-device classification, without the need for a cloud connection. This allows devices to respond faster, save on telemetry data costs, and extend battery life.

In such a rapidly evolving field, we continually keep up to date with the latest hardware and software advancements to ensure we push the boundaries on what connected products are capable of.

Rapid prototyping

We recongise the value in getting hardware into your hands as early as possible. We produce plastic parts in house with both FDM and SLA 3D printing, and work with fabrication and assembly partners who turn PCBs around in days, so you can hold a working device while the design is still cheap to change.

We lay out early boards with the production schematic in mind; choosing components that are actually available at volume, and designing enclosures around real tooling constraints, so what we deliver early still holds when you scale.

This matters a lot when you are raising money. Investors want to see the thing working in the room, and they will ask what it costs to build at volume. A prototype that answers both is often what moves a round forward.
